Where would we be without comfort food?  Kid friendly, party food, quick and easy, Sloppy Joe’s are an American favorite.  Why bother with packaged mixes or the canned stuff?  This recipe is so easy  and tasty (and you can get the kids involved) that you’ll never go back to the pre-mixed version.

Sam’s Sloppy Joe’s

Ingredients:

1 Lb lean ground beef

4 cloves garlic, minced

6 oz (1 can) tomato paste

1 Tbsp brown sugar

1 Tbsp chili powder

1/2 tsp dry mustard

1/4 tsp paprika

1/4 tsp salt

1/8 tsp ground ginger

2 cups tomato sauce

2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 Tbsp red wine vinegar

Method:

1)    In a large skillet, over medium heat, brown the meat.

2)    Remove the meat from the pan and set aside.

3)    Drain all but 1 Tbsp of the fat from the pan.

4)    Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes

5)    Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 more minutes.

6)    Add the brown sugar, chili powder, mustard, paprika, salt and ground ginger.

7)    Cook for 1 minute.

8)     Add the reserved meat, tomato sauce, Worcestershire and red wine vinegar.

9)    Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes.

10)   Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.

Serve on crusty rolls, hotdog buns or sweet potato biscuits

Yield: 4 servings
